Interior & exterior house painting

Interior and exterior house painting for considered homes across Melbourne, Bayside and the Surf Coast. Every surface is assessed, prepared and finished as part of the architecture — and the finish holds.

About us

Every surface, considered.

Traditional painting standards, applied with a designer's eye. Every project begins with thoughtful preparation, clear advice and attention to the details that make a space feel resolved — not simply repainted.

SURFACE is run by artists: every painter on the team has a history in the arts world, led by a sixth-generation painter. That brings a considered eye for colour, proportion and light to the practical work of painting.

We repair, prepare and protect before a coat goes on. Coating, sheen and finish are specified for the material, its use and its exposure — sound methods, quality materials, and work that wears well and feels calm, even and intentional.

Our Services

  • From simple touch-ups to complete interior and exterior repaints, SURFACE works across walls, ceilings, trims, doors, facades, eaves, fences and other painted surfaces. Where a new direction is needed, we can also help develop a colour scheme suited to the architecture, materials and natural light of the space. Every project is approached with careful preparation and a finish designed to last.

  • Limewash, mineral paints, textured coatings, patinas and custom decorative treatments developed through consultation and refined through sampling. Each finish is applied by hand, bringing colour, texture and material character into the space.

  • From minor cracks, dents and worn or faded finishes through to rust, coastal corrosion and more extensive surface damage, SURFACE repairs and restores walls, timber, metal, masonry and painted surfaces. This includes renewing aged timber coatings and weathered finishes, treating corrosion and deterioration at the source, and applying coating systems suited to the material and its exposure. The aim is to extend the life of the surface while restoring how it looks and performs.

  • External timber is always exposed to sun, rain and changing weather. Over time, coatings fade and break down, surface growth can develop, and moisture can begin to find its way into vulnerable edges, joints and end grain.

SURFACE offers planned timber maintenance to keep exterior details looking good and performing as they should. A regular program of inspection, cleaning, preparation and recoating helps address wear early—before it becomes a larger restoration job.

What we paint

Interior house painting

Walls, ceilings, trims, doors and feature rooms finished cleanly, with minimal disruption to your home. We help with colour, sheen and finish selection, protect floors and furnishings while we work, and leave every room spotless.

Exterior house painting

Weatherproof paint systems for weatherboard, render, masonry and timber — facades, eaves, windows, fences and decks. Surfaces are repaired and properly prepared before any coat goes on, so the finish stands up to coastal and city conditions alike.

Preparation & paint systems

The right system for each substrate: architectural paint systems, premium natural and mineral paints, breathable limewash and protective coatings — specified for longevity, never brand loyalty. Every quote sets out exactly how each surface will be prepared, primed and finished.

Areas we service

Based between Bayside and Lorne, we paint across Melbourne and the greater Surf Coast — Brighton, Hampton, Sandringham and the bayside suburbs; Torquay, Anglesea, Aireys Inlet and Lorne on the coast.

Our process

Clear communication at every step

From the first conversation to the final coat, we keep things simple, transparent, and stress-free. You'll know exactly what to expect at every stage of your project.

01Phone consultation

Tell us about your project, your goals, and your timeline. We'll answer your questions, discuss your options, and determine the best next steps for your home or business.

02On-site walkthrough

We'll visit your property to assess the scope of work, inspect surfaces, discuss colours and finishes, and identify any preparation required before painting begins.

03Detailed estimate

Rather than a vague list of rooms and numbers, each quote is presented as a clear visual project page: what is being painted, how surfaces will be prepared, finishes and options, and the approach from start to finish. It is a more considered way to begin—transparent, detailed and easy to refer back to.

FAQ

Painting questions.

  • Yes — quotes are free. We'll talk on the phone, walk the property together, then send a visual estimate that shows exactly what's being painted and how each surface will be prepared and finished. No vague line items.

  • Almost never. Interior work is staged room by room with floors and furnishings protected, so the household keeps functioning while we work.

  • We work across architectural paint systems, premium natural and mineral paints, silicate coatings, limewash and protective coatings. The system is chosen for the substrate and its exposure — for longevity, never brand loyalty.

  • It depends on the size of the home and the preparation required — weathered surfaces need more repair before painting begins. Your quote sets out the scope and timing clearly before work starts.

  • Yes — coordinated painting programs for apartments, common areas and managed properties, planned around residents and building schedules.

Specialty surface treatments

Beyond conventional paint, a growing part of our work is in specialist finishes — breathable limewashes, textured finishes, reactive metallic patinas and mineral coatings drawn from houses like Keim, Resene and Porter's Paints. Each is chosen for the substrate, the architecture and the character a space is reaching for.

Why coastal homes need more care

On the coast, a finish works harder than it does anywhere else. Salt, wind-driven moisture and unfiltered UV break coatings down years faster than the same system would inland — which is exactly why a planned maintenance rhythm matters more here, both for the building and for the budget.

Two of the things that most decide how an exterior finish ages are covered at length in the journal: why coatings near the bay fail unevenly, and why preparation determines how a painted surface ages. Most of this work happens close to home — see painting and finishes across Brighton and Bayside.
